If your party plans include drinking this New Year’s Eve, have fun and keep it safe by planning ahead, especially since taxis can be in very short supply as demand rises.

Here are several options to ensure safer, happier celebrations to ring in 2015:

  • Assign a designated driver for your group or arrange for a friend or family member to either be on call or pick you up at a predetermined location and time.
  • AAA Tipsy Tow – If you find yourself stranded and unable to drive, you, a friend, bartender or party host can call 1-800-400-4AAA to request Auto Club of Southern California’s Tipsy Tow service for a free tow and ride (driver only) to your home up to seven miles away from 6:00 pm New Year’s Eve until 6:00 am New Year’s Day. See AAATipsyTow for complete details as restrictions apply.

  • Metro Blue Line & Other Metro Services – No fare will be charged on Metro Rail and Bus lines from 9:00 pm New Year’s Eve until 2:00 am New Year’s morning. Free fares will only apply until 2:00 am. Those boarding buses and trains after 2:00 am will need to TAP to ride. Fare is $1.75 with two hours of free transfers. Metro will provide all-night service on the Red, Purple, Blue, Expo, Green, Gold, Orange and Silver Lines. Metro Rail and the Orange Line will run every 20 minutes from 1:00 am to 5:00 am. The Silver Line will run every 60 minutes from midnight to 4:00 am.

NOTE:  From 7:00 pm Dec. 31 thru 3:00 am Jan. 1, Downtown Long Beach Station will be closed (Use First Street Station) due to a New Year’s Eve celebration on Pine Avenue. As a result, the Blue Line will operate modified service during this time: trains will run every 10 minutes between 7th Street/Metro Center and Willow Street Station, and every 20 minutes between Willow Street and 1st Street Station. Click Metro New Year’s Eve for complete information.

  • Taxis can be hard to come by on New Year’s Eve: Call Long Beach Yellow Cab at 562-444-4444 or text your location to 310-574-2228 and wait for a text confirmation.
  • Uber car services offers a more recent addition to alternative transportation options.
  • Or plan to stay home or find a venue close by so you won’t need your car!

After all, what good is a New Year if you’re not around to enjoy it? Happy New Year!
